LAMBDA CHAPTER RULES
Lambda Chapter shall operate under the International Constitution, the By-Laws of Gamma State Oklahoma, and the Chapter Rules that have been adopted by the chapter. The Chapter Rules have been developed by the chapter membership and may be revised by the membership as provided in Section XII.
The purpose of Chapter Rules is to give the membership at the chapter level the right to make decisions related to the programs and activities of the Society and yet abide by the International Constitution and the By-Laws.
I. NAME
The name of this chapter shall be Lambda Chapter, Gamma State Oklahoma, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. DKG can be used at any time to designate the organization.
II. PURPOSES
The purposes of this Chapter shall be the seven purposes of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International CONSTITUTION, ARTICLE II, and those of Gamma State organization.
III. MEMBERSHIP
A broad cross section of educational interests should be represented in the membership of Lambda Chapter. Diversification of expertise from all kinds of professional educators in public or private schools, in specialized institutions, and in colleges and universities expands the perceptions of members.
A. Qualifications
To be considered for invitation to active membership, a woman educator must:
1. Have had professional preparation.
2. Be employed in educational work at the time of her
election.
3. Be an educator who is employed or lives in the chapter
area.
4. Demonstrate professional proficiency with
characteristics such as:
a. knowledge and skill in her area of educational
work
b. active participation in professional groups at
local, state, regional, national and/or
international levels
c. interest in professional growth through
reading, attending workshops, participating in
education travel, pursuing graduate study, and
other professional activities.
d. evidence of leadership.
5. Have personal attributes such as:
a. initiative
b. open-mindedness
c. tactfulness
d. enthusiasm.
6. Have been a contributing member of her
community.
B. Eligibility
A woman who is employed as a professional educator or has been retired from an educational position may be invited to active membership in Lambda Chapter (a first-year teacher through any number of retirement years).
C. Classifications
Active. Active members shall be women who are currently employed as professional educators or have been retired from an educational position.
An active member shares in financing chapter activities, participates in chapter programs and projects, contributes to committee work, votes, and may hold office.
Reserve. Reserve members shall be formerly active members who are unable to participate fully in the activities of Lambda Chapter.
Reserve members have all the privileges of membership except that of holding office and have no obligations except payment of dues. Reserve status once granted is permanent as long as the annual dues are paid.
Honorary. Honorary members shall be women not eligible for active membership who have rendered notable service to education or to women and are elected to honorary membership in recognition of such service. They shall be privileged to participate in all activities except that of holding office. However, an honorary member may serve as parliamentarian. The chapter pays a lifetime fee for international publications at the time of initiation for each honorary member.
Collegiate. Collegiate members shall be women actively pursuing a career in education and are involved in educational organizations and activities.
D. Nominations
The membership committee shall distribute nomination forms for prospective members at each meeting.
Prospective members’ applications will be read and voted upon by the members present at the February meeting.
E. Invitation
An official invitation signed by the chapter president, together with a copy of the Society Information Brochure is sent or delivered to each prospective member at least two weeks prior to the initiation date.
F. Orientation
The membership committee shall explain the financial obligations, attendance policies, and other specifics of the Society before initiation.
G. Initiation
Initiation shall be held each year in April and the chairman of initiation (past president) shall be responsible to work with the president in planning the appropriate procedure. Initiation ceremonies shall be followed as written in the ceremonies publications. The initiate pays initiation fee, and cost of the DKG pin at the time of initiation.
An individual is not a member until she has been initiated. A prospective member elected for invitation to active or honorary membership shall be initiated within a period of one year from the time of election.
H. Attendance
An active member shall participate in the activities of the society. The DKG pin should be worn at each meeting on a ribbon or in another manner as desired by the member.
A valid reason for non-attendance shall include illness, bereavement, or serious illness of family, or performance of professional duties, travel, or obligation of a personal nature. The member shall present to the president or hostess for the month the reason for her absence, and this reason shall be given to the membership.
I. Transfer
A member in good standing may be transferred from one unit of the Society to another upon application to International Headquarters. The receiving chapter does not vote to receive the member since the transfer is automatic.
J. Termination
Membership in Lambda Chapter is terminated for one of three reasons: Non-payment of dues, resignation, or death.
A resignation from membership with an explanation for withdrawal shall be presented in writing to the chapter president and brought to the chapter for vote. The date of the request and the chapter actions shall be recorded in the minutes.
K. Reinstatement
A former member may be restored to membership upon payment of dues and participation in chapter activities.
IV. FINANCE
A. Dues
Chapter dues shall be determined by chapter vote. Dues are payable by June 30, each year. If a member has not paid dues by June 30, the treasurer must drop the member from the chapter roll.
Active Members: $75.00
Reserve Members: $40.00
Collegiate Members: $40.00
B. Contributions
Contributions are voluntary gifts. Members may participate in benevolent or educational projects as determined by the membership.
C. Budget
The budget shall be developed by the finance committee and shall be presented to the membership for changes, additions, deletions, and approval at the beginning of each biennium. Expenses approved in the budget shall be paid upon the presentation of a claim. All claims must be approved by the president before being paid by the treasurer. All claims are filed.
Any expenses not provided for in the budget must be presented to the chapter for approval. The treasurer shall make a written and oral report at each chapter meeting.
D. Audit
An audit of the treasurer’s books shall be made by the finance committee at the end of each biennium and reported to the chapter at the next regular meeting.
V. ORGANIZATION
A. Chapter Boundaries
The boundaries of Lambda Chapter have been set by Gamma State. Only persons living or teaching within the boundaries may be invited into membership. The boundaries of Lambda Chapter are Custer, Washita, and Dewey counties. (Except by special permission by Gamma State.)
VI. OFFICERS
A. Chapter Officers
Lambda Chapter officers shall be a president, first vice-president, second vice-president, recording secretary, and corresponding secretary, all elected; and a treasurer selected by the president and approved by the Executive Board. The parliamentarian shall be appointed by the president.
B. Duties of Officers
In addition to the duties assigned in the Constitution, the first vice-president shall be chairman of the educational excellence committee; and the second vice-president shall be chairman of the membership committee; and the corresponding secretary shall be chairman of the communications committee.
C. Slate of Officers
The slate of officers shall be presented at the February meeting by the nominations committee which has been appointed by the president and approved by the Executive Board. The installation of officers shall be at the April meeting.
VII. EXECUTIVE BOARD
A. Membership
The Executive Board shall consist of the elected officers and the immediate past president as members with voting rights and the treasurer as ex officiate member, without vote.
B. Meetings
The Executive Board shall meet twice each year upon the call of the president. During the first year of the biennium one of the meetings shall be held to acquaint each person with her duties and to make plans for programs and activities of the coming years.
During the second year of the biennium, at least one of the meetings shall be held to distribute report forms and to organize reports to be sent to international and state.
The president may call a meeting of the Executive Board at any time one is needed.
VIII. COMMITTEES
A. Standing Committees
Lambda Chapter shall have the following committees:
Society Business:
Finance (composed of four members and the treasurer,
who is ex-officio)
1. Prepare and submit the budget at the
beginning of the biennium
2. Supervise expenditures and investments
3. Provide for the audit ant the end of the
biennium
4. Recommend amount of chapter dues and

5. Examine all records and certify to the accuracy
of the records

forms and encourage members to submit
recommendation for new members and
nominations.
2. Conduct orientation or prospective members to

policies, and other specifics of the Society

4. Work with the chapter president to nurture and

5. Plan and conduct memorial services for
deceased members
6. Create a collegial, friendly atmosphere at all
meetings
Nominations (composed of four members, one of which
must be a past president)
1. Solicit from the members suggestion for
officers, President, First Vice President,
Second Vice President, Recording Secretary,
and Corresponding Secretary
2. Ascertain that the nominated person will serve
if elected.
3. Present to the chapter, in even numbered
years, the committee’s choice of one
candidate for each elective office
4. Prepare the ballot or nominees may be
presented to the chapter orally. Installation
may take place after the election or a later
meeting. Officers assume their position on
July 1
5. Send immediately the names and addresses
of new officers to the state president and to the
international executive director.
Educational Excellence
1. Be responsible for promoting programs and
projects for excellence in education
2. Support programs of action that promote the
personal well-being, intellectual growth, and
global awareness of women educators
3. Develop strategies that will encourage
members to become leaders
4. Urge the members to initiate, endorse, and
support desirable legislation or other suitable
endeavors in the interest of education and or
women educators
Educational Services:

If need arises for a special or ad hoc committee, such a committee shall be appointed by the president with approval of the Executive Board.
IX. MEETINGS
A. Number of Meetings
The chapter shall have six meetings each year: September – April. Dates and sites shall be determined by the Executive Board and shall be printed in the yearbook.
B. Quorum
A quorum at a regular scheduled meeting shall be 40 percent of the paid membership. A quorum for a special meeting shall be 50 percent of paid membership.
C. Electronic Meetings
The President shall determine the type of meetings to be held. As such, the President is authorized to call electronic meetings when inclement weather, emergencies, or extenuating circumstances make in-person meetings less advantageous. Robert’s Rules of Order will apply to electronic meetings.
X. PUBLICATIONS
A. Chapter Newsletter
The chapter newsletter is prepared by the corresponding secretary, posted to the Chapter website and emailed to the membership prior to each meeting.
B. Chapter Website
A signed copy of the release form of every member to comply with the Society’s Internet policy for digital communication in regards to privacy and copyright issues will be kept on file with the communications committee. Updates to the website will be made prior to each scheduled meeting.
XI. SPECIAL FUNDS and/or PROJECTS
A. Scholarship
During the second year of the biennium, the chapter shall present a $300 scholarship to a senior education student attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Selection shall be made during the fall semester. Payment for the spring semester shall be arranged through the University business office. Selection of the recipient shall be the responsibility of the scholarship committee. The recipient shall be honored at a chapter meeting, and the chapter shall cover all expenses incurred.
B. Chapter and Program Guest
The chapter will be responsible for any expenses incurred for invited State officer and a guest. The chapter will be responsible for any expense incurred for program guests.
C. Memorials
Following the death of a chapter member, the treasurer shall send a contribution to the Dorothea Meagher Scholarship Fund.
XII. AMENDMENTS
A. Additions
Additions may be made to Lambda Chapter Rules by a majority vote of the members present at any regular chapter meeting provided the proposed addition has been presented at the previous meeting.
B. Changes
Changes may be suggested and discussed at any given meeting and presented and voted on at the next regular meeting. A two-thirds majority of members present is necessary for passage.
YEARBOOK AND PINS
Members are expected to bring their yearbooks and to wear their pins and name tag at each meeting.
When a member resigns, she should return her pin to the Chapter.
RESERVATIONS
When reservations are made, the member must pay for the meal, even when not attending if the venue charges for the food provided.

When a member resigns, she should return her pin to the Chapter.
RESERVATIONS
When reservations are made, the member must pay for the meal, even when not attending if the venue charges for the food provided.
